If you have been around campus recently, you may have noticed a lot of construction on campus. It is certainly not the prettiest campus has ever been, but it is certainly going to change very soon. On the southeast corner of campus, near Chandler/Red Door Marketplace and relatively close to the undergraduate houses, the old Winnett student center was recently torn down. A bunch of scaffolding has gone up very quickly after the demolition, making way for the Hameetman Center. This new building will house lots of meeting rooms, some study spaces, and Red Door will move back there as well. It should be open around the time of the next academic year (end of 2018), so I won't be here to see it in its finished glory. Here is a shot of the construction right now:
There has also been a lot of talk around Bechtel, a new student residence opening up on the north edge of campus. I won't get too bogged down in the details now, but it has been built up fairly quickly. Some parts of it are even open for tours. It should be ready for students to move in this fall!
There is one last building that will open up - the Chen Research Institute for Neuroscience. It will be located on the northwest corner of campus. To my knowledge, not too much construction has happened. Last time I looked, the ground was just cleaned up for construction. Basically, the next few years will bring about a new shiny Caltech!
