A lot of people have asked me if I get to meet and interact with people from nearby schools. There are so many great schools in the So Cal area, including but not limited to Caltech (of course) and the Claremont Colleges (Claremont McKenna, Pomona, Pitzer, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps). The Claremont Colleges are also in our SCIAC conference, which means we compete against them in college level athletics. They are all about 40 minutes away from Caltech.
One of my good friends from high school goes to Claremont McKenna, and she recently invited me to her school's winter formal (aka "Wedding Party"). Since I hadn't seen her in awhile, I decided to go visit her and get a taste of life at other schools. The premise behind Wedding Party is that it is a fake wedding. You can get a table with your friends that includes dinner, or you can just go to the reception after dinner (I did the latter). There is a live band, a wedding cake, and a fake bride and groom, who are members of the graduating senior class. I thought the concept was so fun, so I wanted to share it with you all!
Caltech is small (~1000 undergrads), but there are definitely opportunities to meet college students outside of Caltech. Aside from going to parties at other schools, there are academic conferences/competitions, networking events, club events, and sporting events. For example, Caltech partners with Occidental College to host Science Olympiad events for high schoolers. Another example is an event the Caltech Racing club held on campus with CSUN and UCI. Yet another example is my house's tradition of tailgating basketball games. We go to away games, grill in the school parking lots, and then cheer on the Caltech basketball teams. Feel free to comment if you have any more questions/concerns about this topic. :)
