Week 4 at Caltech just finished, and that means...<insert drumroll>...MIDTERMS! <GASP!>
The weekend before Week 5 of the term was quite a bustling weekend, as many things were happening on campus (and because nobody wanted to do anything during midterms weekend...or Super Bowl weekend, for that matter). This last weekend was filled with great ways to destress after a crazy week and to rejuvenate for the 4-hour marathon exams that test endurance, knowledge of material, precision, and (the biggest challenge) resistance to frolicking in the beautiful Southern California sun.
Avery had guys’ and girls’ nights on Friday, so the ladies could bring out their inner female. It included a rainbow of nail polish, trashy women’s magazines, facial masks, cookie decorating, a chocolate fountain with fruits for dipping, and...the one thing that tempted a lot of guys to opt for girls’ night...Mean Girls!!!
Rebecca and Danielle with their cosmetics and Neeli in the back reading a magazine.
Cookies (the green one was Wesley’s fault, as he stopped by and “nearly” stayed back for the movie.
Look who decided to stop by...guys’ night needed some use of Nerf guns.
Yes, Wesley, we have fresh-baked cookies.
George striking a pose for the camera while Jacob contemplates the meaning of life with a cookie.
Not only were there girls’ night and guys’ night, but ASCIT <read: ASB of Caltech> hosted “ice” skating in the parking lot of Broad center. I stopped by on my way back from PE, as I am not the biggest fan of skating.
Don’t fall!!!
The weekend ended with the chamber music concert series. There are six concerts total, spanning two weekends from Friday to Sunday. Our group performed on Sunday afternoon in Dabney Lounge (I had mentioned this in “On a Related Note...”). We performed three pieces: Sonata in G by Keller, Mozart’s Church Sonatas in F and B flat, and an arrangement of “Always With Me” from Spirited Away, a Japanese animated film. The seats were full, and it was a real treat.
Our awesome group. Photo credits to Steven Frautschi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Frautschi) I am proud to say I taught him how to take a picture with an iPhone. Frautschi, though a Professor Emeritus at Caltech, still TAs for Ph1a (a good thing because he wrote our book, The Mechanical Universe).
Quote of the Day: More fortunes from CDS fortune cookies: “If you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
